CHAPTER 15

The new truce in the valley was not recognized by all parties involved for a couple of days. Perhaps the first to notice was Cody, for on the day after the two Double-K assassins came after him, he noticed a difference. The Double-K men returned to the job of tending cattle and there were no more two-man scouting teams searching for him. In the days that followed, he continued to scout the Double-K range to confirm their returning to the business of raising cattle. It was difficult for him to accept the new peace at face value after his short history with the Kincaid brothers.

It took a couple of days before Morgan and Holt were forced to acknowledge the new peace with the Kincaid brothers. But it finally dawned on them one day while they were overseeing the erection of a fence around a cave-in of a small section of the riverbank. Several cows had fallen victim to the cave-in. One of them suffered broken legs from the fall, resulting in fresh beef steaks at supper that night. Holt was the first to broach the subject. “You know, we were talking about this yesterday at the cookshack. Nobody’s seen any of those Double-K two-man patrols ridin’ around the fringes of our range for the last couple of days. Whaddaya reckon that was all about, anyway? Think they were just trying to keep an eye on us?”

“I reckon,” Morgan replied, “either that or they were lookin’ for Cody. I’m sure they don’t believe he’s really gone.”

“I didn’t wanna say anything about it,” Holt said, “but is it just me, or has Double-K backed off a little bit? I mean, it looks to me like they’re keepin’ their strays off our land. And in general, it almost looks like they’re just mindin’ their own business. After all the crap they’ve tried to pull on us, I can’t believe they’d just give up. Can you?”

“No, that is hard to believe, but they have backed off a little bit. They got hurt pretty bad when they decided to move right in on our land. And Emmett Kincaid made a lot of big talk about taking over that valley of ours by the boundary creek. I expect he’s still got a pretty sore throat from havin’ to eat all those words.” He shook his head slowly as he thought about the confrontation at the creek. “I hope this peace we’re enjoyin’ right now is because he’s finally convinced we ain’t gonna let him walk all over us.”

“I hope you’re right,” Holt said. “I’m going into town in the mornin’ to pick up some supplies. I’ve been puttin’ it off for a few days because I didn’t know if we might have some trouble with Double-K. And I was afraid to leave the ranch for half a day.”

Morgan grinned. “Well, if you’re still worried about it, we can always send one of the men in to get the supplies.” He was pretty sure Holt was planning to pay a call on Spring Lawrence, the postmaster’s daughter, while he was in town.
